Noorani Qaida for Kids: A Parent’s Guide to the First Step in Reading the Quran

Admin ·

Blog

Every child who reads the Quran fluently once started with the Arabic letters. For most children around the world, that first step is the Noorani Qaida, a short beginner’s book that teaches how to read Arabic letter by letter, sound by sound, until the child can read words from the Quran on their own.

If your child is about to start Quran classes, this guide explains what the Noorani Qaida is, what your child will learn, how long it usually takes, and how you can support them at home.

What is the Noorani Qaida?

The Noorani Qaida is a step-by-step reading course for complete beginners. It does not teach the meaning of words. Its goal is to teach correct pronunciation and reading, so that the child can later read any page of the Quran with confidence.

It works well for children because each lesson is short, builds on the one before it, and gives the child a quick sense of progress. Adults who are new to Arabic often use it too.

What your child will learn, lesson by lesson

  1. The Arabic alphabet. Recognizing and pronouncing all 28 letters correctly, including sounds that do not exist in English.
  2. Joined letters. How letters change shape at the beginning, middle and end of a word.
  3. Short vowels (harakat). Fatha, kasra and damma, the small marks that give each letter its sound.
  4. Tanween. The double vowel marks that add an “n” sound at the end of a word.
  5. Long vowels (madd). Stretching sounds with alif, waw and ya.
  6. Sukoon and shaddah. Stopping on a letter and doubling a letter.
  7. Reading real words. Practice with words and short phrases taken from the Quran.

Along the way, a good teacher also introduces the very first tajweed habits, such as where each letter comes from in the mouth and throat.

How long does the Noorani Qaida take?

It depends on the child’s age, how often they have classes, and how much they practice between lessons. With regular classes several times a week and a few minutes of daily review, many children finish it within a few months. Younger children may need more time, and that is completely fine. Accuracy matters far more than speed.

Why a live teacher makes the difference

Apps and videos can help children recognize letters, but they cannot hear your child. Many Arabic letters sound similar to English speakers, for example ح and ه, or ق and ك. A teacher listens to every sound and corrects it immediately, before a wrong habit forms. Fixing a habit later is much harder than learning it correctly from the start.

How parents can help at home

  • Review for five minutes a day. Ask your child to read the last lesson aloud before bed or after school.
  • Listen, even if you are still learning. Your attention matters more than your own level of Arabic.
  • Keep the book in a special place. It helps children treat their Quran study with respect and excitement.
  • Celebrate milestones. Finishing the alphabet or reading the first full word deserves real praise.
  • Be patient. Some lessons take longer than others. Steady progress is the goal.

What comes after the Noorani Qaida?

Once your child completes the Qaida, they are ready to start reading directly from the Quran, usually beginning with the short surahs of Juz Amma. From there they continue learning tajweed rules and, if they wish, begin memorizing.
